How much do missed calls cost a tradie?

The short answer

Work out your own number in a minute: calls missed each week, times the share that would have booked, times what a job is worth. Then stop the leak with a text back to every call you miss.

Your number, from your week.

Move each one to match a normal week. Nothing here is an average: every figure is yours.

5

On the tools, driving, after hours.

2

Be honest: some are wrong numbers.

400

The average job, not the biggest.

Work that rings out, a year

$0

0 job a week, worth $0 a week.

Calls missed a week, times the share that would book, times the job, times 52 weeks.

Why the missed call is the expensive one.

  1. They rang because it's now

A tripped switch, a burst pipe, a job they want booked this week. They're not browsing.

  2. They ring the next number

A caller who hears nothing doesn't wait. The next business on the list picks up the job.

  3. Nobody leaves a message

Plenty hang up at the beep. Without a record, you never know the job was there.

  4. After hours is where it leaks

The seven o'clock call is often the urgent one, and the one nobody picks up.

What stops it.

  1. WhenA call goes unanswered.

A text back from your own number, in your words.

  2. WhenA website enquiry lands after hours.

A reply goes out, whatever the time.

  3. WhenA job is marked done.

A review request goes to the customer.

Relay does all three, from the number you already have, with nothing to install.

What tradies ask about missed calls

How many calls do tradies miss?

The only number that matters is yours, and a missed call leaves no trace unless something records it. Count yours for one normal week, on the tools, driving and after hours, and put the number in the calculator above. More on getting more work as a tradie.

What is a missed-call text-back?

A text that goes out from your own number when a call goes unanswered. It tells the caller you saw it, asks what they need, and keeps them talking to you instead of the next business. Relay does it from the number you already have.

Does the text come from my own number?

Yes. Customers ring the number they always have, and the text goes out from that number, in your words. There's no app and no new number.

What should the text say?

Who you are, that you're on a job, and a question they can answer. Something like: "Hi, it's Sam's Electrical. Sorry we missed you, we're on a job. What can we help with?"

Does it work after hours?

Yes. A call missed at seven at night gets the same text back as one at seven in the morning, and you're notified to call back when you're free. It's one part of lead response and follow-up.
